Catholic Traditions & Customs

An ancient Catholic ritual on the feast of the Epiphany is the blessing of our homes, while using blessed chalk.

Take blessed chalk (of any colour) and mark on the lintel of your front door:

20 + C + M +B + 20 saying:

The three wise men
C Casper
M Melchior
B and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became human
20 two thousand
20 and twenty years ago
++ May Christ bless our home
++ and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.

“God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him”
1 John 4: 16

(“CMB” stands for the traditional names of the wise men, and also signifies the Latin prayer “ Christus Mansionem Benedicat” or “May Christ bless this dwelling”)
